Palmerston is Darwin’s satellite city, about twenty minutes down the Stuart Highway, and most of its housing is newer than Darwin’s: the older suburbs like Driver, Gray and Moulden date from the 1980s, while Durack, Rosebery, Bellamack, Johnston and Zuccoli have been built out over the last twenty years and are still growing. Nearly all of it is tiled from front door to back, because tiles stay cool underfoot and cope with the wet season better than anything else.

That means two kinds of grout problem. In the newer estates it’s large-format porcelain with light grout through open-plan living areas, where every mop leaves the lines a shade darker and the kitchen end goes grey from cooking grease. In the older suburbs it’s smaller tiles, more grout per square metre, and showers that have had thirty wet seasons of mould and soap scum. Both clean up well. The first usually needs $9/m² and a seal; the second is more often a bathroom at $229 with colour sealing if the grout has stained through.

Rentals, defence postings and inspections

A lot of Palmerston turns over every few years: defence families posted in and out of Robertson Barracks, FIFO and government tenants, and investors with property managers who photograph the grout at every inspection. If you are moving out, book the tile clean for the day before your bond clean and put your handover date in the notes; a general bond clean wipes tiles down but rarely deep-cleans grout, and that is the thing that gets noted. Landlords and property managers can book between tenants on the same published prices; invoices go to whoever is paying.
