Shower cleaning and bathroom tile cleaning in Darwin

Black spots in the grout, a pink or grey film in the corners, tiles that feel slippery or dull. Bathrooms take the worst of the Top End humidity. Our shower cleaning is a deep clean of the tiles and grout, not a general bathroom tidy. Here’s how it works and what to expect.

Mould and mildew in shower grout

Mould and mildew need three things: moisture, warmth and something to feed on. A shower provides all three every day, because soap residue and skin oils settle into the grout. In Darwin, the air often stays humid enough that a shower recess doesn’t fully dry between uses, especially in the wet season or in bathrooms without a window or a strong exhaust fan.

It usually shows up first in the corners, along the bottom rows of tiles and around the drain, where water sits longest. Left alone, it works into the grout and becomes much harder to shift.

What’s included in a bathroom clean

  • Shower recess walls (to tiled height) and floor, including niches and ledges
  • Bathroom floor tiles and any tiled walls outside the shower
  • Mould and mildew treatment on affected grout
  • Soap scum and body-product build-up removed from tiles and grout
  • Rinsing and extraction of the dirty solution
  • Optional clear or colour sealing once the grout is dry

Before and after

Most bathrooms look very different afterwards: grout lines go back to a clear, even colour and tiles lose the dull film. Where mould has stained deep into old grout, you may still see a faint shadow. Colour sealing covers that. Mould inside silicone usually stays, because it has grown into the silicone itself.

Keeping it clean after we leave

  • Run the exhaust fan during and for a good while after showers. In the wet season, longer is better.
  • Squeegee the walls after showering. It takes 30 seconds and removes most of the water mould needs.
  • Leave the bathroom door open when you can so air moves through.
  • Wipe the grout weekly with a mild bathroom cleaner. Don’t rely on bleach, which can fade coloured grout and only lightens the surface.
  • Seal the grout. Sealed grout absorbs less water and soap, so it dries faster.

How long it takes

About an hour to an hour and a half for a shower recess, two to three hours for a bathroom. Allow extra if sealing. After a clean you can usually use the shower once the cleaner has finished. After sealing, wait for the cure time the cleaner gives you, often around 24 hours.

Questions about showers and bathrooms

Why does mould keep coming back in my shower?

Mould needs moisture, warmth and something to feed on, such as soap residue and skin oils. A shower that stays damp between uses, in a humid climate, gives it all three. Cleaning removes it; ventilation, a quick squeegee after showering and sealing the grout slow its return.

Can you remove mould from silicone?

Usually not. Mould in silicone often grows into the silicone itself, so cleaning only lightens it. The fix is replacing the silicone, which we don’t currently do. We’ll tell you if that’s the case.

Do you clean the shower screen?

We focus on tiles and grout. Glass, taps and fittings get rinsed during the clean, but restoring glass isn’t part of the tile clean.

What if my shower is leaking?

Signs like stains on the other side of the wall, loose or hollow-sounding tiles, or a musty smell that never goes away can point to a leak. That needs a waterproofing or tiling specialist, not a clean. If we see signs of it, we’ll tell you before doing any work.
