Rural blocks, big floors

Howard Springs is about twenty-five kilometres from Darwin and Humpty Doo about forty, out along the Stuart and Arnhem Highways in the Litchfield Council area. Most homes sit on rural-living blocks of an acre or more, and they tend to be big, single-level houses with tiled floors running the full length: kitchen, dining, living, hallway and often the verandah edge too. A 60 or 80 m² tiled living area is normal out here, which is why floors are priced per square metre rather than per room. Measure the tiled rooms, add them up, and the price is on the page.

Red dirt, bore water and the wet

Two things mark out rural grout from suburban grout. The first is the red laterite soil: it comes in on boots, dogs and kids, and over a few years it works into light floor grout as a brown-orange tint that mopping spreads rather than removes. The second is bore water. Many rural properties run on bores, and where the bore is high in iron, the water leaves orange staining in showers, around taps and along grout lines. Iron staining needs a different treatment from mould and from ordinary dirt, so tell us if you are on bore water when you request a quote; it helps the cleaner bring the right products.

Add the wet season on top. Rural homes are often more open to the air than suburban ones, which helps, but a shower recess at the end of the house with no exhaust fan still stays damp for months, and that is where grout mould starts. A clean and seal in the dry season, before the build-up, is the best timing.

How rural bookings work

To keep the price the same as Darwin without a travel charge, we group rural jobs onto set days rather than sending a van out for a single job. That means a rural booking may be a few days further out than a Darwin one. Give us two or three dates that suit, and say in the notes if you have a hard deadline such as a tenancy handover. If your road or gate needs explaining, put that in the notes too.
